A ration card is a document issued by the government of India to households in order to purchase subsidised food grains and fuel from the Public Distribution System (PDS). The card is used as proof of identity and residence, and is usually issued to the head of the household. It is an important document for people living below poverty line as it gives them access to subsidised food grains and fuel.
Type of Ration card
There are different types of ration cards in India, issued by the state governments based on the economic and social status of the household. The main types of ration cards include:
Above Poverty Line (APL) card: Issued to households that are above the poverty line, and are not eligible for subsidies.
Below Poverty Line (BPL) card: Issued to households that are below the poverty line and are eligible for subsidies.
Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card: Issued to the poorest of the poor households and provides the highest level of subsidies.
Priority Household (PHH) card: Issued to households that are eligible for subsidies but do not fall under the BPL or AAY categories.
Annapurna card : Issued to senior citizens who are unable to cook for themselves and are not receiving any pension from the government.
