Ahmedabad: In another case of fraud involving mobile phones, the Cybercrime Police registered a complaint against one Abdul Shaikh for allegedly changing the international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers of mobile phones. Police have registered cases of IPC 420,465,468 and 471 The Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 Section 25.

After the decoy received the phone back with the changed IMEI number, the accused was detained and questioned by the police. The accused admitted to using certain software on a computer to change the IMEI number of the phone.

Changing the IMEI number of a phone is illegal in many countries, including India, as it can be used to commit various cybercrimes, such as identity theft, fraud, and phone cloning.
