Protecting Citizens from Cyber Fraud: Launch of International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System

0
On October 22, 2024, Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia launched the 'International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System' to protect citizens from cyber fraud. This innovative system, developed by the Department of Telecom (DoT), identifies and blocks incoming international calls that pose as Indian numbers. Let’s dive into how this system works and why it’s a significant step toward digital safety.

What is the 'International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System'?

This system is designed to identify and block international calls that appear as Indian numbers (+91-xxxxxxxxx) due to manipulation of the caller ID. These spoofed calls give the impression of originating in India but actually come from abroad, misleading people and creating risks for cyber fraud.

How Do Spoofed Calls Lead to Cyber Fraud?

Cybercriminals use spoofed calls to carry out various fraudulent activities. They manipulate caller IDs to make it appear that the call is from a legitimate Indian number. These calls often involve:
- Threatening disconnection of mobile numbers, pretending to be DoT/TRAI officials
- Fake digital arrests or legal threats
- Claims of drugs or narcotics in courier packages
- Impersonation of police officers or other government officials
- Threats of arrest in false cases like sex rackets

How Does the System Work?

The DoT has collaborated with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to create this system, which identifies and blocks spoofed calls before they reach Indian telecom users. In just 24 hours of operation, the system blocked approximately 1.35 crore spoofed calls, covering 90% of incoming international calls posing as Indian numbers. With this system in place, users in India should see a notable reduction in such fraudulent calls. Su

What to Do If You Still Receive Spoofed Calls?

While this system is highly effective, fraudsters may still attempt scams through other methods. If you receive a suspicious call, you can report it through the ‘Chakshu’ facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal (https://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). If you have been a victim of cyber fraud or have lost money, report it immediately via the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or on the website https://www.cybercrime.gov.in.

The launch of this system marks a milestone in DoT's ongoing efforts to secure India’s digital landscape and protect citizens from cyber fraud. With this new technology, the government is committed to providing a safer digital experience for all.
